John and Lucy Nicholas – NCAC Scholarship Fund

Established in 1988 by the NCAC, this scholarship is named in honor of two devoted and lifelong supporters of West Virginia University, who selflessly gave their time, talent, and treasure to promoting WVU in the Washington, DC area. John and Lucy Nicholas were WVU graduates and founding members of the NCAC, and today their scholarship provides support for several deserving students every year.

About John and Lucy Nicholas

Lucy and John, both graduates of WVU, were instrumental in founding and maintaining the National Capital Area Chapter and advocated for establishing our scholarship fund from its earliest days up until John’s death in 2000. John was a career US Army officer and USDA employee, and while on active duty with the Army, served as an ROTC instructor at WVU. During his tenure, John was among those responsible for the establishment of the WVU Rifle team and was its first coach. Residing in Arlington, VA for most of their lives, they were most active in the operation of the National Capital Area Chapter in every way necessary to accomplish the mission of the NCAC, whether as elected officers, board members or program chairs, or aiding in the recruitment of students and athletes to attend WVU. John was honored by WVU with various service awards, including Most Loyal Mountaineer and induction into the Order of Vandalia Society. Lucy was a career home economics teacher in the Arlington County school system and an active member of the NCAC.
